WHEN AND WHERE DHOLAVIRA WAS FOUND??

At India’s western edge there lies one of the world’s greatest wastelands. It is the salt flats called the Rann of Kutch. This massive area was once part of the ocean. Over millennia geological changes have turned this into one of the largest expanses of salt on earth. It is the site where one of the greatest cities of India’s on recorded history; the Harappan city of Dholavira was present. This was first discovered in 1956 by Archaeologists Jagat Pati Joshi. According to the historian this valley is about 5000 years old which thrived for 1200 years. (3000 BCE-1800 BCE).

WHY DHOLAVIRA BECAME SO FAMOUS??

DholaVira’s excavations began in 1990. Years of careful digging revealed priceless antiquities. But one day a single white stone emerged from the ancient ground. Then more symbols appeared, perhaps of an unknown language or code or maybe a sign. A total of 10 symbols were unearthed made of baked white gypsum. More interestingly these were found at the base of a gate; which could have been a signboard at that time. This was unlike anything that had ever been found. Nobody knows what these symbols means because the code breaker for harrappan script has not yet been developed.

• Dholavira is located in the Kutch district of modern-day gujarat. It was part of one of the largest cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation. According to archaeologists the city was spread over a hundred and twenty acres. It is older than Egypt’s great pyramids.
• Dholavirans were a sophisticated community and were ahead of their time period. They had advanced technology for that point of time. They had underground drainage, had burnt bricks.
• Also had a city that was planned from before it was built. It was built on a platform which showed that there was an idea of civic planet.
• There was an idea of the understanding of trigonometry and the calculation that are involved in building a metropolis. But there is zero clue about these ancient urban planners.
• People of Dholavira had concepts of civil engineering, geology and hydrology. Also this place is considered to have one of the greatest water harvesting systems among ancient cities.
• The city complex was laid out between two seasonal rivers i.e. the Mansar in the north and the Manhar in the South. These two rivers were linked to interconnecting tanks built around the city. They had harnessed water using channels, using dikes, using dams.
• 5000 years ago Dholavira was a thriving port of the Arabian Sea. Among other goods its citizens were creating beads for export. Those beads made in Dholavira have been found as far away as Mesopotamia or modern-day Iraq.

SOME UNSOLVED MYSTERY ON HISTORY OF DHOLAVIRA.

• Biggest mystery is in the disappearance of Dholavira. Many historian named it as Manhattan of its time. This had an advanced civilization. They had harnessed the powers of nature. Also they were trading across the world, that had a population of thousands and it disappeared. What happened? Many researchers suggest that this was due to the climate change but there is no proof to support this theory.
• What happened to Dholavirans writing? What happened to their technology of city construction and where did it disappear?
• How the people of Dholavira were using concepts of trigonometry even before the existence of the word?
• Did these ancient Indians use clay models to plan and build their city?
• How these people were so ahead of their era?

These leaves us with more questions than answers. Even today we are still learning many things about history of Dholavira but much will remain as mysterious as its undeciphered codes.
